The Story of Jimmy Corrigan
Jimmy Corrigan is a middle-aged office worker who lives a dull and lonely life in Chicago. He has no friends, no hobbies, no love interests, and no self-esteem. He is constantly tormented by his abusive and overbearing boss, Mr. Johnson, and his nagging and guilt-tripping mother, Amy. He also suffers from vivid and disturbing fantasies, in which he imagines himself as a superhero, a war hero, a cowboy, or a child.
One day, Jimmy receives a letter from his estranged father, James Corrigan Jr., who invites him to visit him in Waukosha, Michigan. Jimmy decides to take a chance and accept the invitation, hoping to find some connection and meaning in his life. However, he soon discovers that his father is not what he expected. He is an old and frail man who lives in a trailer park with his young girlfriend and her son. He is also rude, selfish, and insensitive to Jimmy's feelings. He tries to bond with Jimmy by taking him to a carnival, a baseball game, and a Thanksgiving dinner, but he only ends up embarrassing and disappointing him.
Meanwhile, the novel also reveals the stories of Jimmy's ancestors, who share similar traits and fates as him. His grandfather, James Corrigan Sr., was a lonely and abused boy who ran away from home and joined the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. There, he met and fell in love with a young black woman named Ann Louise Coleman, who worked as a maid for the White City Hotel. However, their relationship was doomed by the racism and violence of the time. His father, James Corrigan Jr., was also a lonely and abused boy who grew up in an orphanage and later became a soldier in the Korean War. He met and married Amy when he returned from the war, but he soon abandoned her and Jimmy when he was only four years old.
The novel shows how Jimmy's life is shaped by his family history and how he struggles to overcome his inherited loneliness and trauma. It also explores how Jimmy's fantasies contrast with his reality and how he tries to cope with his pain and disappointment.
